Star Trek Picard series cast, release date, trailer and everything you need to know

The rumours, first voiced by The Hollywood Reporter in June, turned out to be true.

In August, the announcement came from Patrick Stewart himself.

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course.

“It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.

He added: “During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership.

“I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.

“I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavour to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”

Which is obviously more exciting – and potentially dangerous – than sharing a holodeck with a pissed-off Klingon.

We desperately want this show to be brilliant – Picard deserves nothing less. So, we’ve stuck on our favourite VISOR to analyse all the latest data (see what we did there?)

Star Trek Picard series release date: When will it arrive?

Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION

While we’re nowhere near finding out a release date, the Picard series is moving way faster than we expected. We only found out about this thing properly last month, and Stewart’s already in the writers’ room with the new creative team.

You’re looking at Academy Award-winning A Beautiful Mind writer Akiva Goldsman (he also wrote Batman & Robin, but let’s not worry about that right now), Star Trek: Voyager and Discovery veteran Kirsten Beyer, Spider-Man 2‘s Michael Chabon, new talent Diandra Pendleton-Thompson and Star Trek: Enterprise‘s James Duff.

Star Trek Picard series cast: Who will be in it?

So, we’re pretty, pretty sure Patrick Stewart will be in this thing in some capacity – we’ve just got a feeling – but who will join him?

After a reunion shot of Stewart with the Next Gen cast landed on Twitter earlier this month, fans got excited that it was a preview of what we could expect from the new series.

Sadly, that hope turned into fear (much like the Next Gen episode ‘Hope & Fear’ – you come to DS for deep cuts, right?) that they wouldn’t be involved at all, when Marina Sirtis clarified the situation by saying the original cast haven’t been approached.

Addressing rumours that the USS Enterprise-D crew were getting back together, Marina said: “All I have to say – all we have to say – when Patrick said ‘Jean-Luc Picard is back’, he didn’t say, ‘The Next Generation is back’.”

“We weren’t asked,” she added, before pointing out that she has at least appeared on Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville.

Star Trek Picard series plot: What will it be about?

Sir Patrick Stewart, Captain Picard, returning to Star Trek

The show will reportedly take place 20 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis and will place Picard in a ‘different time and place’.

This would put Picard in 2399, which is after everything we’ve previously seen on Star Trek. It’s post-Deep Space 9, after Voyager and even follows the events of JJ Abrams’ Star Trekredux.

We’ve made some elaborate guesses as to what that setting could mean for the storyline of the new series, and you can read those here.

We’re nowhere near a trailer yet – they haven’t even written the first episode. But we predict it’ll begin with a voiceover and a shot of space. ‘Life. The final frontier…’
